The head of the Intelligence Committee in the US House of Representatives, Adam Schiff, sent a message to the Saudi Ambassador to Washington, Princess Rima Bint Bandar, expressing his concern about the continued detention of the activist, Jane Al-Hathloul.
Schiff said in his message: “I am writing to you to follow up on the message of January 7, 2019, which I sent to your predecessor, Prince Khalid bin Salman, regarding the illegal imprisonment of women's rights activist Lujain al-Hathloul. And dangerous, too. ”
He continued: “Lujain has been held without trial since May 2018, and her trial has been postponed again and again without explanation, and evidence of her alleged crimes has not been presented. She was held for long periods without contact with her family, and there are reports that she was subjected to physical and psychological torture while in prison, as well as threats of rape and murder.
Schiff stressed that he is not alone in "the constant concern about this issue and other issues that involve the detention and imprisonment of peaceful defenders of women's rights", referring to the draft resolution approved by the House of Representatives in July 2019, on Al-Hathloul Prison and other women's rights activists .
Schiff warned that "Saudi Arabia's failure to address these concerns will be a factor in the decisions that Congress makes regarding future US cooperation with and support for the kingdom."
Schiff called on the Saudi ambassador to inform him about Al-Hathloul's case.
